Almost everyone books this day with the same picture in their head: a white beach inside a ring of limestone cliffs, green water you can see the bottom of, and a speedboat somewhere in the frame. What nobody tells you before you book is that several quite different days are sold under the same heading, they cost very different amounts, and they are not interchangeable.
The first is the early start. Boats that leave before the day traffic and reach Maya Bay while it is still quiet, then spend the rest of the day on Pileh Lagoon, the snorkel stops and lunch on Phi Phi Don. Our top pick is one of these: nine hours from Krabi, taking in the four islands as well.

There are several different days here, not one. An early start that reaches Maya Bay before the day boats, a standard island day of seven to ten hours, and a four or five-hour outing from Phi Phi. They end at different times.

Where the boat starts changes the whole day. Eight of the eighteen leave from Phuket and four from Krabi and Ao Nang, so the crossing is part of your day. The ones that start on the islands put you at Maya Bay within the hour.

Maya Bay is quietest early. Several listings here are built around beating the day traffic, and the operators say so in as many words: an early start time is the reason those departures exist.

Private is the whole boat, not a seat. On the private charters the fare covers the hull and the crew, so it splits across your party instead of multiplying by it, and the route is arranged around you.

The month sets what is running. November to April is the dry season on the Andaman Sea, with flat mornings and the full timetable. May and October are the turning months, and from June to September the monsoon calls some departures off on the day.

How long is a Phi Phi speedboat tour?
The full day tours from Phuket, Krabi and Ao Nang run seven to ten hours, counted from the pier meeting point or the hotel pickup rather than from the time on the water. Our top pick, the early bird day from Krabi, is nine hours. If you are already on Phi Phi Don the short outings are four or five hours, and a one-way transfer takes about forty minutes.
What is the ride across like?
A speedboat crosses the open Andaman Sea, so you feel the swell and there is spray when the hull meets a wake. Mornings in the dry season are usually the flattest water of the day, which is one reason the early departures exist. If you would rather have a steadier hull, the speed catamarans here are the bigger boats, and one caps its list at 28.
What is included in the price?
On most of the day tours here the boat, the guide and a buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don are one booking, and snorkelling equipment is handed out at the stops. Some listings name more: the limited-group catamaran lists snorkelling and safety gear and English-speaking guides, and the Phuket day to Khai Island states that the National Park fees are inside the fare.
Are the National Park fees extra?
It depends on the listing, so read that line before you compare two fares. The Phuket tour to Maya Bay and Khai Island says the National Park fees are already included. Where a listing says nothing, expect to settle them at the park, and keep small notes for that.
When is Maya Bay at its quietest?
Early. Several tours here are built around an early start for that reason, and the operators say so in their own words — beating the day traffic is the point of those departures. Our top pick leaves Krabi early and reaches the bay ahead of the fleet; the sunset and plankton tours come at the other end of the day.
Where do the boats leave from?
